Panchakarma & Treatments

Panchakarma is a set of Ayurvedic detoxification therapies designed to release toxins (accumulated from faulty lifestyle and wrong food habits) from the body at a cellular level. It comprises five classical procedures: Vaman (therapeutic emesis), Virechana (therapeutic purgation), Basti (medicated enema), Nasya (nasal instillation) and Raktamokshan (bloodletting). Therapies are advised by Tapasya’s Ayurvedic doctors after a thorough examination.

Vaman helps eradicate aggravated Kapha from the stomach. It is recommended in conditions such as recurrent cold, cough, sinusitis, asthma, GERD, nausea, heartburn, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, allergic rhinitis, indigestion, anaemia and hyperacidity. It involves administering medicated ghee for three to six days followed by a rest period and supportive external therapies.

Virechana cleanses and detoxifies the liver, spleen and blood (Rakta dhatu), improving the digestive system. It is recommended in liver disorders, skin disorders, digestive disorders and inflammatory conditions such as joint pain, arthritis, rheumatism, obesity, type 2 diabetes and psychological disorders.

Basti is the administration of a medicated enema through the anorectal route and is considered half of the entire Panchakarma treatment. It helps regulate Vata and benefits the nervous system, hormonal system, bones, joints and reproductive system. It is used extensively in joint and spine care, nervous-system disorders such as paralysis, and to improve fertility. Basti is given in sets such as 8, 15, 21 and 30, depending on the condition.

Nasya is the instillation of medicated oil or ghee drops through the nostrils to expel toxins from the head and neck and nourish organs in that region. It is effective in sinusitis, asthma, cough, migraine, facial paralysis, Parkinson’s and cervical spondylitis (neck pain).

Raktamokshan is a bloodletting procedure to remove vitiated blood. It can be done through Siravedhan (similar to blood donation) or Jalokavacharan (leech therapy), where a leech slowly draws blood from the affected area. Leech therapy is useful in inflammatory joint disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis and gout, and skin disorders such as eczema, psoriasis and acne.

External therapies include Abhyang (oil massage), Dhara (oil/decoction/milk bath), Shirodhara, Janu Basti, Kati Basti, Greeva Basti, Hrud Basti, Netra Tarpan, Shiro Basti, Karna Pooran, Gandusha, Mud therapy, Yoga therapy, steam baths (Bashpa Sweda), immersion baths (Avagah Sweda), Pinda Sweda (pottali), Parishek Sweda, hip bath, spinal bath, Lepa and Rope & Belt therapy for degenerative joint and spine disorders.
